Alejandro Jodorowsky's Teatro Panico

Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of cinema's most intriguing and bizarre figures. He speaks five languages, was born in Chile, and holds a dual citizenship in his nation of birth and in France. He is most well known for the midnight movie El Topo, an acid western which  contains no less than fields of blood strewn desert, a man with no legs sitting atop a man with no arms, and dwarf nuns.  Jodorowsky did not operate in only one medium, however.  In his long and creative career, he has written plays, comic books/graphic novels and conventional novels. He also dabbles in psychomagic, having created his own deck of Tarot cards.

This very rare and exceptional edition of a collection of plays, which looks to have writing by the author scribbled in the title page, is entitled Teatro Panico.  It is a collection of the plays by himself and several of his cohorts in the Teatro Panico movement, which sought to apply the standards of surrealism of Dali, Buñuel and Breton with a distinctly cruel edge, attempting to quell the way in which surrealism had become en vogue and appropriated by bourgeoisie circles.

In a paperback from 1965, this book was published just five years after the movement began.  With its incredible and bizarre narratives, unorthodox characters and insane illustrations, this book is a great find.

Even if you can't read Spanish, this book is a great collector's item for anybody interested in Jodorowsky and the history of cult theatre and film movements.
